Cakes, macaroons, pralines and an awful lot of chocolate. Judging from the amount of people queueing in front of its most prestigious pâtisseries, Paris is facing this long and snowy winter with a good dose of sweetness. If you happen to be in town in the next few weeks, here are a few addresses that you can’t go wrong with. La Patisserie des rêves: created by famous confectioner Philippe Conticini, it offers great and innovative pastries and sweets (displayed inside beautiful bell jars) and a cool and futuristic interior design. The address is rue du Bac, a few steps away from the Boulevard Saint Germain (and there’s also a tea room at 11, rue de Longchamp). Don’t miss the traditional Tarte Tatin e the éclairs.
La Chocolaterie de Jacques Genin: a supplier for posh Hotel Meurice, Jacques Genin has opened his own tea room in the Marais. Apparently, his chocolate millefeuille, assembled on the spot, is the most sought-after cake in town.
Angelina: a true institution, this rue de Rivoli Belle Epoque cafeteria is one of Amélie Nothomb’s favourite spots in Paris. Tourists from all over the world keep praising its hot chocolate, thick and served with a mountain of hand-whipped cream (on the side) and a pitcher of water. Try it with a Mont-Blanc, if you dare |
