In 1948 the first mass produced rocking chair was introduced by Charles and Ray Eames. There were five different chairs: DAX, SAX, LAX, RAR, and LAR. The only difference was the height of the chair and the type of chair. The first Eames Lounge RAR Rocker was made out
of Parchment, large shock mounts, black painted rods, and birch runners. This first design hadbeen discontinued, it is said that the wire crossing in front of the chair made it difficult and uncomfortable because it had been too close to the heels of a person’s feet. Within a year the problem was solved, and the wires were then moved to the side of the chair, as seen today. The design of the rocking chair incorporates style and comfort. The front includes a waterfall edge allowing for extended periods of rocking, the shell of the chair has deep seat pockets with a high, flexible back. The “Baby Rocker” has the same design as the RAR rocker but it is upholstered. Herman Miller produced the rocking chair from 1950 to 1968 for the general public; in 1968 to 1984 the chairs were solely produced for employees of Herman Miller with newborn babies. Today, still true to the design by Charles and Ray Eames, the rocking chair is offered in eco-friendly durable material with an assortment of colors to choose from.
