The Vista Alegre porcelain factory was founded in 1824 by Jos� Ferreira Pinto Basto. He was a remarkable man of enterprise. Since the beginning of porcelain production, Vista Alegre has undergone years of great change, becoming a mark of Portuguese culture in the world. Since the beginning of XIX century, the company participated in various international exhibitions, where it became recognised for its exceptional quality and unique style. Over a period of time the Vista Alegre company has grown and modernized combining its technological capacity with the creativity of contemporary artists, achieving indisputable international prestige. The Portuguese Republic President officially uses Vista Alegre's tableware. Also used in the White House and by many Royal families and politicians around the world, like Queen Elisabeth II of England, king Juan Carlos of Spain, Queen Beatriz of Netherlands, president Ronald Reagan and the most recent president of Brazil Lula da Silva - they all own Vista Alegre's tableware. But celebrity's tables are not the only places where you can find Vista Alegre's pieces, also museums around the world keep valuable pieces in their showrooms. Vista Alegre pieces shine in the showcases of famous museums, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Following an active period of acquisitions in 2001, the Vista Alegre Group merged with Atlantis Group to form Vista Alegre Atlantis, the largest Iberic group in Tableware and Giftware and one of the biggest in Europe. This represents the merger of two of the most prestigious Portuguese brands. Today, with a technology and production park among the most advanced in the world, Vista Alegre produces about 15 million porcelain items each year and exports to more than 20 countries worldwide.
