The starting point of this project was a very specific production process: cast iron. It is one of the oldest methods of working ferrous metals. The production process has an almost archaic physicality and materiality. Iron foundries make part of heavy industry.
Although cast iron is mainly used for decorative purposes, such as in Victorian garden furniture, it is a material with two peculiar characteristics: it is heavy and strong. Cast iron behaves well in case of compression: that's why it is used as a structural material in bridge construction and, on a scale closer to that of furniture, as the basis for heavy machinery.
It is precisely this use of cast iron that inspired BRUT, a collection of tables and benches. The project recalls the industrial use of cast iron and applies the grammar of this material to the realm of contemporary furniture: a solid and uncompromising material. The name Brut in fact means raw and untreated, but at the same time it also brings to mind the sweetness of sparkling wine. A name that expresses refinement and sophistication, which are also characteristics of our project.
The name evokes something rough, unfinished. A massive piece of heavy and inflexible iron. However, BRUT also brings to mind the sweetness of sparkling wine, which speaks to us of refinement and elegance, qualities that are also intrinsic to our project.
The BRUT collection consists of a large rectangular table, a height-adjustable trestle table, two round tables, a bistro table and two types of benches.
